Champions Trophy 2025: Pakistan semifinal qualification scenario after losing to India in Group A match

By MyKhel Staff

Pakistan's hopes of reaching the semifinals of the Champions Trophy 2025 took a massive hit after their six-wicket defeat to India in Dubai. Virat Kohli's sublime century powered India to chase down 242 runs, leaving Pakistan winless after two matches in Group A.

With zero points from two games and a net run rate (NRR) of -1.087, Babar Azam's side now faces an uphill battle to stay alive in the tournament. The loss has put them in a must-win situation, with their fate hanging on the results of the remaining Group A matches.

Pakistan semifinal qualification scenario Champions Trophy 2025

Let's analyze how Pakistan can still make it to the Champions Trophy 2025 semifinals but before that let's take a look at the points table:

Champions Trophy 2025 Group A Points Table

Team Mat Won Lost Tied NR Pts NRR
India 2 2 0 0 0 4 +0.647
New Zealand 1 1 0 0 0 2 +1.200
Bangladesh 1 0 1 0 0 0 -0.408
Pakistan 2 0 2 0 0 0 -1.087

Possible Ways for Pakistan to Qualify for Semifinals

1. Win their last group-stage match against Bangladesh by a big margin

  • Pakistan faces Bangladesh on February 27 in Rawalpindi.
  • A defeat will eliminate them from the tournament.
  • Even a narrow win may not be enough, as net run rate (NRR) will likely play a decisive role.
  • To improve their qualification chances, they must secure a convincing win to boost their NRR above at least one other competing team.

2. New Zealand must lose both their remaining matches

  • New Zealand currently has 2 points and an NRR of +1.200.
  • If they lose to Bangladesh (Feb 24) and India (Mar 2), they will also be stuck on 2 points.
  • In this scenario, Pakistan, New Zealand, and Bangladesh could all finish with 2 points, making NRR the deciding factor.

3. Bangladesh must not win both of their remaining matches

  • If Bangladesh defeats both New Zealand and Pakistan, they will finish with 4 points and qualify alongside India.
  • For Pakistan to have a chance, Bangladesh must either lose to New Zealand or India, ensuring multiple teams end up on 2 points.

4. NRR battle if three teams end up with 2 points

  • If Pakistan beats Bangladesh and New Zealand loses both matches, all three teams will be tied on 2 points.
  • In this scenario, the team with the best NRR will qualify.
  • Given that Pakistan’s NRR is currently the lowest (-1.087), they must win big against Bangladesh to improve it.

Pakistan’s semifinal hopes are hanging by a thread. Their first priority is to beat Bangladesh convincingly. However, even that won’t guarantee a spot unless other results go in their favor. They must also hope for New Zealand to lose both matches, creating a potential three-way tie where NRR will determine the second semifinalist from Group A.

With the Champions Trophy 2025 Group A still wide open, Pakistan’s fate is not entirely in their hands. They must now rely on big wins and favorable results to stay in contention.
