As the much-anticipated Champions Trophy 2025 edges closer, discussions surrounding India's squad have intensified. Former India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh has added fuel to the debate by backing Sanju Samson over Rishabh Pant for the wicketkeeping role in the tournament.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Harbhajan highlighted Samson's recent performances and adaptability as reasons to consider him for the marquee event. Samson, who has consistently impressed in white-ball cricket, particularly in T20Is, has emerged as a key contender.

His historic achievement of smashing three T20I centuries in a calendar year, coupled with a composed century against Bangladesh on home soil, has bolstered his case.
"Sanju Samson has shown remarkable maturity and ability in the shortest format. He grabbed opportunities with both hands after Rohit Sharma retired from T20Is," Harbhajan remarked. Comparing Samson to Rishabh Pant, Harbhajan suggested that the Kerala batter's experience in South African conditions could give him an edge in high-pressure tournaments.
Rishabh Pant, on the other hand, has been India's go-to wicketkeeper in recent years. However, his unfortunate accident in 2022 sidelined him for a significant period, and since his return, the southpaw has had limited opportunities to reclaim his spot. While acknowledging Pant's explosive batting and past performances, Harbhajan speculated that the management might lean towards resting him, given his exhaustive tour of Australia. "If Pant is rested, it's not a big deal. Samson has proved he can step up when needed," Harbhajan added.
The Champions Trophy 2025, returning after a seven-year hiatus, promises to test teams in unfamiliar conditions. The selection dilemma isn't limited to wicketkeeping alone. Harbhajan also weighed in on the all-rounder conundrum, advocating for Axar Patel over veteran Ravindra Jadeja. "Axar Patel is ready to take over the role Jadeja has excelled in for years," Harbhajan stated, further hinting at India's potential transition phase.
With the BCCI yet to finalise its squad, Harbhajan's views have added a fresh layer to the ongoing debate. Will the selectors side with experience or reward recent form? The answer will shape India's chances in their quest for Champions Trophy glory.
