Champions Trophy 2025: Shubman Gill to be next India captain? Shikhar Dhawan gives Strong Opinion!

By MyKhel Staff

Former Indian opener Shikhar Dhawan has heaped praise on India's current vice-captain Shubman Gill, highlighting his impressive form in the ongoing Champions Trophy.

With India set to face New Zealand on March 2, Dhawan expressed confidence in Gill's bright future with the national team.

Shubman Gill

Gill is likely to stand in as captain amid Rohit Sharma's potential sit out for the clash against New Zealand. Rohit suffered a niggle while fielding against Pakistan and the team management has opted to not risk him for the final group stage encounter.

"I simply love Shubman Gill's batting - it's very classy, and there's elegance in his batting. And there's consistency, it feels good to see that there's so much professionalism. He's got a great present and future for India. Rohit enjoys playing with youngsters, and he must be sharing his many years of experience with them. I'm sure he must be patting them (on the back) and telling them how to play in given situations. These small communications are very important," Dhawan said in a conversation with Jio Hotstar.

Addressing the absence of star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, Dhawan acknowledged that India undoubtedly misses his presence but also pointed out the opportunity it has created for young bowler Harshit Rana.

"Jasprit Bumrah is a very big name, a very big bowler. He is such a consistent performer there. Of course, his presence was missed a lot. Whether anybody says anything or not, I feel 100 % that his presence is very important. It is a very good platform for Harshit Rana," said Dhawan.

Dhawan, who was part of the Champions Trophy side in 2013, which eventually won the tournament, tipped Harshit Rana to learn from the senior stars and also praised his wicket-taking ability.

With the semifinal qualification already settled, India will be aiming to end their group stage campaign on a high. The winning team between India and New Zealand will finish at the top of Group A points table.
