New Zealand's Tom Latham delivered a batting masterclass in Karachi, crafting a sensational century to anchor his side to an imposing 320/5 against Pakistan in the opening match of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
Walking in at a precarious 73/3 in the 17th over, Latham took charge of the innings with composure and class. He stitched a crucial 118-run stand alongside centurion Will Young, who played a fine knock of 107 off 107 balls, marking his maiden century outside New Zealand. After Young's departure, Latham continued to dominate, forging another crucial 75-run partnership with Glenn Phillips to ensure New Zealand finished on a strong note.

Latham's innings also saw him achieve a personal milestone, surpassing 2,000 ODI runs in away conditions, becoming only the fifth New Zealander to do so in just 60 innings. His fluent stroke play and ability to find the gaps kept the scoreboard ticking as he guided the Kiwis past the 300-run mark.
Pakistan, opting to bowl first, suffered an early setback when star opener Fakhar Zaman was forced off the field due to a knee injury just two balls into the match. Their bowlers initially found some success, with Naseem Shah, Haris Rauf, and Abrar Ahmed striking at regular intervals, but they struggled to contain the determined New Zealand middle order.
Despite early breakthroughs, Pakistan's attack lacked penetration as Latham and Young seized control, capitalizing on the scoring opportunities in the middle overs. Glenn Phillips added a late flourish with a brisk knock, ensuring the Black Caps posted a competitive total on the board.
With 321 runs needed for victory, Pakistan face a challenging chase under pressure in front of their home crowd. All eyes will now be on their batting lineup to see if they can rise to the occasion.
