Persistent rain in Lahore forced the Champions Trophy 2025 Group B clash between Australia and Afghanistan to end in a no-result, ensuring Australia's passage to the semifinals.
Both teams shared a point, taking Australia to four points, while Afghanistan remained on three, leaving their fate dependent on the England-South Africa encounter. South Africa, however, are the strong favourites for the semis as they just need to avoid a heavy defeat.

If South Africa wins, Afghanistan will be eliminated. If England wins, the second semifinalist will be determined by Net Run Rate (NRR). However, Afghanistan's NRR of -0.99 puts them in a precarious position, requiring South Africa to suffer a massive defeat for them to qualify.
Meanwhile back to the match at Lahore's Gaddafi Stadium, Australia looked in control at 109/1 in 12.5 overs while chasing 274 when rain interrupted play. Travis Head was in imperious form, smashing 59* off 40 balls, while Steven Smith remained unbeaten on 19. Australia had made a blazing start, with Matthew Short (19) attacking early before falling to Azmatullah Omarzai.
Head continued the charge, punishing Afghanistan's bowlers with a flurry of boundaries. However, just as Australia was racing towards a dominant position, the heavens opened, and persistent rain ensured no further play was possible.
Earlier, Afghanistan posted a fighting total of 273 in 50 overs. Sediqullah Atal anchored the innings with a fluent 85 off 95 balls, while Azmatullah Omarzai provided the finishing flourish with a blistering 67 off 63, including five sixes. Contributions from Rahmanullah Gurbaz (38) and Mohammad Nabi (32) added depth to the innings.
Australia's bowlers kept the scoring in check, with left-arm seamer Ben Dwarshuis starring with figures of 3/47. Adam Zampa (2/48) and Spencer Johnson (2/49) also made crucial breakthroughs, preventing Afghanistan from pushing past the 280-mark.
With their fate now out of their hands, Afghanistan can only hope for a favourable result. Meanwhile, Australia will march into the semifinals, aiming to extend their dominance in the tournament.
