The Champions Trophy 2025 has been full of thrilling encounters, but rain in Lahore has added an extra layer of uncertainty to Group B's semifinal race. The highly anticipated clash between Afghanistan and Australia at the Gaddafi Stadium was ultimately washed out, with heavy showers preventing any further play.
Australia, who were chasing a target of 274 and had reached 109/1 in 12.5 overs, looked well on course before the rain interruption. However, the persistent downpour ensured that no further action was possible, leading to a no-result.

With the match ending in a washout, both Australia and Afghanistan were awarded one point each. This outcome favours Australia, who move up to four points in the group standings, securing their spot in the semifinals.
Afghanistan, on the other hand, find themselves in a precarious position. The washout leaves them stranded at three points, meaning their progression now depends entirely on the outcome of the England vs South Africa match.
For Afghanistan to qualify, they need England to defeat South Africa. In such a case, South Africa and Afghanistan will both finish on three points, and the second semifinalist from Group B will be determined by Net Run Rate (NRR).
However, Afghanistan’s current NRR of -0.99 puts them at a severe disadvantage. South Africa’s NRR is significantly higher, meaning only an extraordinary defeat for the Proteas would give Afghanistan a lifeline.
To surpass South Africa on NRR, Afghanistan would need England to secure an enormous victory. For instance, if South Africa is chasing a target of 301, they would need to lose by at least 207 runs for Afghanistan to move ahead in the standings. Such an outcome is highly improbable, making Afghanistan’s qualification hopes extremely slim.
With Australia safely through to the semifinals, Afghanistan can only wait and hope for a miracle in the England vs South Africa clash. Otherwise, their Champions Trophy campaign will come to an unfortunate end due to the washout in Lahore.
