Champions Trophy 2025: What will be Pakistan opening combination with Saim Ayub set to be ruled out?

By MyKhel Staff

Pakistan's plans for the Champions Trophy 2025 could undergo a significant overhaul, with reports indicating that skipper Babar Azam might take on an opening role alongside Fakhar Zaman.

The adjustment comes as Saim Ayub, who has been struggling with an ankle injury, is likely to miss the tournament, as reported by Samaa TV correspondent Qadir Khawaja.

Babar Azam's potential move to the top order marks a notable shift in Pakistan's batting strategy. While he has excelled at number 3 and 4 in ODIs, Babar is no stranger to opening, having done so in T20Is and recently in the Test series against South Africa. The team management is reportedly keen on leveraging his stability at the crease to build a strong foundation alongside Fakhar, who returns to the squad after a hiatus.

This change could push Kamran Ghulam to the crucial number 3 spot, providing a dynamic and versatile option in the top order. Meanwhile, Imam-ul-Haq and Shan Masood have been named as standby options for the opening slot, should further adjustments be required.

Notably, Abdullah Shafique is unlikely to feature in the squad following a disappointing run in white-ball cricket throughout 2024. His inconsistent form has reportedly prompted selectors to prioritize a more stable and impactful opening combination, which Babar's presence is expected to ensure.

Another potential inclusion is forgotten all-rounder Khushdil Shah, who could bolster Pakistan's middle order with his explosive batting style. With a lack of firepower in the middle overs being a concern, Khushdil's ability to accelerate the innings could fill a crucial gap in the team's strategy.

Despite these proposed changes, Pakistan's core group remains largely intact. Key players such as Mohammad Rizwan, Shaheen Afridi, and Haris Rauf are expected to form the backbone of the squad as the team gears up to defend their Champions Trophy crown.

As the only team yet to officially announce its squad, Pakistan faces mounting pressure to finalize a combination that balances stability and firepower. With Saim Ayub's injury creating a vacancy at the top, the potential Babar-Fakhar pairing could be the key to setting the tone for Pakistan's campaign.
