Champions Trophy 2025: Will Pakistan opener Saim Ayub recover in time for first match on February 19?

By MyKhel Staff

Pakistan's dynamic opener Saim Ayub faces a race against time to recover from a fractured ankle ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025. The 21-year-old batter sustained the injury while fielding on the opening day of the second Test against South Africa in Cape Town.

The setback has sidelined him for six weeks. Despite the challenging timeline, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) remains optimistic about his return. Currently in Cape Town, Saim is set to travel to London for a consultation with a renowned ankle specialist.

The PCB, in a statement, confirmed that local doctors have collaborated with the London-based expert to facilitate the appointment. PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasised the board's commitment to ensuring Saim receives world-class medical attention. "We will do everything within our resources to ensure that Saim gets the best possible treatment and recovers properly under expert care," Naqvi said.

Saim Ayub's injury couldn't have come at a worse time for Pakistan cricket. With a packed schedule, including a two-match Test series against the West Indies and an ODI tri-series featuring South Africa and New Zealand, Saim's absence leaves a significant void in the squad. The Champions Trophy, set to begin on February 19, is a crucial tournament for Pakistan, and Saim's participation could greatly influence the team's performance.

The left-handed opener's ankle has been placed in a medical moon boot to stabilize the injury as part of his initial rehabilitation process. If required, Saim might remain in London for an extended rehabilitation program, ensuring his recovery is not rushed.

Known for his aggressive stroke play and ability to anchor innings across formats, Saim has emerged as a cornerstone of Pakistan's batting lineup. His absence from the team during the ongoing series has been felt, and his potential unavailability for the Champions Trophy 2025 would be a major blow.

The next few weeks will be critical in determining whether the young star can don Pakistan's green jersey in one of cricket's most prestigious tournaments -- Champions Trophy 2025.
