Champions Trophy Awards Ceremony Controversy: ICC explains why PCB officials were missing from the final presentation event

By MyKhel Staff

The International Cricket Council (ICC) has addressed concerns regarding the absence of Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) officials from the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 final presentation ceremony in Dubai.

Cricket Pakistan first reported on the issue, prompting clarification from the global governing body. According to an ICC spokesperson, PCB Management Committee Chairman Mohsin Naqvi was invited to the final ceremony but did not attend.

Pakistan PCB Champions Trophy Awards Ceremony Controversy

"Mr. Naqvi was unavailable and did not travel to Dubai for the final," the spokesperson stated, confirming that no other PCB officials were scheduled to be part of the stage proceedings.

Following the event, many fans and experts questioned why no PCB representatives were seen at the closing ceremony, given Pakistan's role as the tournament host. Responding to these concerns, the ICC reiterated that it follows a consistent protocol for all its global tournaments.

"The ICC only invites the head of the host board -- such as the president, vice president, chairman, or CEO-to participate in the awards ceremony. Other board officials, even if present at the venue, are not part of the stage proceedings," the ICC spokesperson clarified.

The governing body emphasized that this policy has been in place for all major ICC tournaments, making it clear that the absence of PCB officials was due to Pakistan's designated representative not attending the event rather than any intentional exclusion.

Despite this explanation, sources within the PCB have expressed dissatisfaction with the situation and are expected to raise the matter with the ICC. The board reportedly plans to question why PCB CEO Sameer Ahmed Syed was not invited to the ceremony, despite being in Dubai as the tournament director.

"It is concerning that Pakistan was not given representation at the closing ceremony despite the presence of a key PCB official in Dubai," a source within the board stated.

The controversy follows the broader geopolitical tensions surrounding the tournament. The Champions Trophy was originally scheduled to be played in Pakistan, but India refused to travel due to its government's stance. As a result, the ICC shifted all matches involving India, including the final, to Dubai.

The absence of PCB officials at the final ceremony has added another layer to the ongoing discussions about the tournament's organization and the relationship between the PCB and ICC. With the PCB expected to formally raise the issue, further developments on the matter could unfold in the coming weeks.
