Chandigarh Lions win ICL tournament

Hyderabad, Sept 30 (UNI) Chandigarh Lions defeated Chennai Superstars by six wickets to win the Indian Cricket League(ICL) Twenty20 inaugural tournament played at Lahiri Resorts ground here today.

The architect of the Lions' win was a cracking 84-run fourth wicket stand between skipper Dinesh Mongia and the 24-year-old all-rounder Gaurav Gupta.

Electing to bat first, Chennai openers G Vignesh and southpaw Hemang Badani laid a solid foundation before the former departed in the ninth over after scoring 48 runs off 32 balls, studded with six fours and two sixes.

Badani then held the centre-stage, powering a sparkling half century.

The Superstars folded their innings at 136 for eight. Luv Ablish and Dinesh Mongia impressed the conoisseurs of the game by picking two wickets each.

In reply, the Lions got off to a shaky start with the side reeling at 21 for three in the sixth over. However, Mongia (61) in the company of Gaurav, scripted a sensational victory.

Gaurav was declared man of the match for his unbeaten 43.
