AUS vs IND: KL Rahul Confidently Addresses Mental Challenge of Batting Anywhere

KL Rahul, a senior Indian cricketer, expressed confidence in adapting to any batting position. He overcame the mental challenge of being a floater in the line-up.

Rahul's performance in the first Test against Australia in Perth was commendable. He scored 26 and 77 while opening the innings, filling in for Rohit Sharma, who was on paternity leave.

KL Rahul Confidently Addresses Mental Challenge of Batting Anywhere for India

Rahul's Test career began in Australia a decade ago as a middle-order batter before he transitioned to an opener. Over the years, his batting position in both Tests and ODIs has been unstable. This instability affected him mentally, but he has now adapted to various roles. "I have batted in many positions," Rahul shared about his experiences.

Batting Adaptability and Preparation

Rahul explained that his initial challenge was not technical but mental. He had to figure out how to approach the first 20-25 balls of his innings. "How early can I attack? How much do I need to be cautious?" were questions he grappled with early on. Now, he feels more comfortable managing his innings across different formats.

Rahul's approach to Test batting has become more straightforward over time. He believes that if he can handle the first 30-40 balls, the rest of the innings becomes routine. "Whether I am batting top of the order or in the middle order," he stated, focusing on managing those initial deliveries.

Preparation for Opening Role

Rahul was informed well in advance about the possibility of opening in Australia. This allowed him ample time to prepare for the role. He played in the India A series against Australia A to gain valuable match practice. "I got told quite early as I missed out on the New Zealand home series," Rahul mentioned about his preparation timeline.

He emphasised that opening is something he has done extensively throughout his career. "I just had to go back and bat a bit more," Rahul said, highlighting his familiarity with opening the innings and understanding how to score runs effectively.

Rahul's preparation included arriving early to get accustomed to the conditions and participating in practice games. These efforts helped him feel ready for his role as an opener against Australia.

With over 3000 runs in 54 Tests, Rahul values being part of the playing XI regardless of his position. "I just want to be in the playing XI, which means wherever," he stated, underscoring his commitment to contributing to the team.

The experience of playing Tests and ODIs worldwide has given Rahul insights into managing his innings effectively. His adaptability and preparation have bolstered his confidence as he continues to play a vital role for India.
