Charith Asalanka and Asitha Fernando Return Home Despite Pakistan's Assurance Following Islamabad Blast

Sri Lanka's tour of Pakistan has taken another unexpected turn, with captain Charith Asalanka and pacer Asitha Fernando flying back home due to illness. Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) announced their withdrawal from the upcoming tri-series involving Pakistan and Zimbabwe, but provided no further medical details.

The sudden exits have prompted fresh scrutiny, especially given recent security concerns surrounding the tour. SLC confirmed the developments on Monday, noting that former skipper Dasun Shanaka will step in as interim captain for the tri-series, while young all-rounder Pavan Rathnayake replaces Fernando in the squad.

In a statement on X, the board wrote: "Two Players Returning Home: Captain Charith Asalanka and fast bowler Asitha Fernando, both suffering from illness, will return home. The two players will not take part in the upcoming tri-series featuring Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Zimbabwe."

The board also added that prioritising player well-being was key to the decision. "This precautionary decision ensures they receive proper care and sufficient time to recover ahead of future assignments. Dasun Shanaka to Captain With Asalanka unavailable. Pavan Rathnayake has been added to the T20I squad as a replacement."

Their departure comes just days after a tense situation within the Sri Lankan camp. Several players had reportedly expressed a desire to fly back after a suicide bombing in Islamabad claimed 12 lives and injured many others. The attack revived painful memories of the 2009 Lahore terror strike on the Sri Lankan team, a tragedy that left multiple players and security personnel injured.

Pakistan's leadership, including PCB chief Mohsin Naqvi and the country's top military brass, stepped in to reassure the visitors. Speaking in the Senate, Naqvi explained the efforts made to keep the tour on track. "Our field marshal himself spoke to their defence minister, secretary and convinced them and assured them fully of [providing] security," he said, adding, "Our interaction with them began, their board, players, and everyone decided with great bravery to stay here. They had many concerns, but we tried to allay all of those."

Following these assurances, Pakistan assigned military forces to oversee the Sri Lankan team's safety. Nevertheless, the schedule has been reshuffled: the final two ODIs have been postponed to November 14 and 16, while the T20I tri-series has been moved entirely to Rawalpindi, with its opener now slated for November 18.
