Charlie Cassell breaks Rabada's record for best bowling figures on ODI debut, creates two more unique records

By MyKhel Staff

Charlie Cassell, the Scotland debutant who featured in Match 16 of the ICC Cricket World Cup League Two 2023-27 in Dundee on Monday, July 22, broke Kagiso Rabada's record for best bowling figures on ODI debut.

The 20-year-old right-arm pacer registered figures of 7/21 in 5.4 overs to break Rabada's nine-year-old record. The South Africa quick had picked six wickets for 16 runs in eight overs against Bangladesh in his debut ODI match back in July 2015 in Mirpur.

Charlie Cassell also became the first bowler in history to pick two wickets on the first two deliveries in international cricket. He picked three wickets in the first over and did not even concede a single run in his first over in international cricket.

Cassell's figures of 7/21 is the seventh best in the history of ODI cricket. Five more bowlers have picked seven wickets in an ODI match while giving less than 21 runs. Sri Lanka great Chaminda Vaas is on the top of the chart with eight wickets for 19 runs in eight overs in his ODI against Zimbabwe in Colombo in 2001.

The stunning bowling display by Charlie Cassell saw Oman getting bundled out for 91 in just 21.4 overs. Later, Scotland chased down the target in just 17.2 overs and eight wickets remaining. Cassell was adjudged Man of the Match for his performance as the entire Scotland squad gathered for the post-match presentation ceremony.

Scotland climbed to the third spot after the win in the seven-team points table looking to qualify for the ODI World Cup 2027 in South Africa. Canada and Namibia are occupying the first two places.
