Chennai Super Kings (CSK) head coach Stephen Fleming expressed excitement over Ravichandran Ashwin's return to the team for IPL 2025. Ashwin, a seasoned spinner, was acquired for Rs 9.75 crore during the auction.
CSK aimed to strengthen their squad with players whose skills align with the Chepauk pitch, known for its slow and low turn. Ashwin's history with CSK includes title wins in 2010 and 2011.

Fleming highlighted Ashwin's versatility and experience, noting his potential contribution with both ball and bat. "He has still got a very good skill set but the bowlers numbers are fantastic, hes obviously towards the latter part of his career but the experience that he brings is handy with the bat and we think we can use him in a number of ways," Fleming stated. This acquisition marks a homecoming for Ashwin, who has also played for other IPL teams like Kings XI Punjab, now Punjab Kings, Rising Pune Supergiants, Delhi Capitals, and Rajasthan Royals.
In addition to Ashwin, CSK secured Afghanistan spinner Noor Ahmad for Rs 10 crore. Noor previously played for Gujarat Titans in the IPL. Fleming explained that this move was part of a strategy to enhance their bowling options, especially in middle overs. "The choice of Noor Ahmed was looking more at the middle to attack, so if we do get turning conditions, then we've got an opportunity to keep taking wickets," he said.
Fleming elaborated on CSK's approach to bowling tactics, emphasizing the need for specificity in taking wickets. "Weve got Matheesha Pathirana at the end which is the death aspect and weve just identified that the way the games going, your bowling has to be really specific and you have to take wickets to slow teams down," he added. The team aims to counteract powerful hitting by focusing on wicket-taking strategies.
CSK also showed interest in New Zealand's Rachin Ravindra, surprised by the lack of competition from other teams. Ravindra's recent performances have been impressive, particularly in Test cricket.
"Yeah we were, we thought that Rachin, given his success in the Test series that often counts — the performances leading up to an IPL — but we obviously experienced the IPL with us last year," Fleming noted.
Fleming sees potential in Ravindra's development at CSK. "To pick him up at what I think is a low price and continue his development, he could be a player with that skill set," he said. Ravindra shares similarities with Ravindra Jadeja's role in the team but offers future opportunities as his skills evolve.
CSK's strategic acquisitions aim to bolster their squad with versatile players suited to their game plan. By focusing on specific bowling tactics and nurturing emerging talent like Rachin Ravindra, CSK hopes to enhance their performance in IPL 2025.
