'Cheteshwar Pujara is going to get a British Passport': R Ashwin's comment on dropped Indian star

Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has reckoned that Cheteshwar Pujara will get a British passport for the amount of cricket he is playing and runs he is scoring there.

Pujara, who was dropped form the 2-Test series against West Indies following India's defeat in the World Test Championship (WTC) final, has returned to play for Sussex after playing for West Zone in the Duleep Trophy 2023.

The 35-year-old has already smashed two unbeaten hundreds in the ongoing One-Day Cup 2023. He is the third-leading run-scorer in the tournament so far. A total of 329 runs in five matches at an average of 109.66 has come off his bat.

Pujara would also be seen playing in the last leg of County Championship 2023 matches where he has scored 545 runs in six matches at an average of 68.12. The right-hander made an India comeback through his county performances last year.

"And I guess Pujara is going to get a British passport. He has been playing in England that much and making lots of runs there," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Further, Ashwin said he was really happy for Prithvi Shaw, the leading run-scorer in the One-Day Cup 2023. He has scored 429 runs in four innings at an average of 143.00 for Northamptonshire. The 23-year-old hit a double hundred and then followed it up with an unbeaten hundred. Having played his last match for India in 2021, Ashwin said Shaw would get to learn a lot from his county stint.

"I am really happy for someone like Prithvi Shaw. In the short span of his career, he has seen a lot of ups and downs. For him, being away from home, playing in England, and meeting new players, will be like a breath of fresh air for him. It will be like a lease of fresh air in his life.

"There will be a lot of learnings for him. He would learn how to manage his life, and his work ethic. He will be in a position to teach a few youngsters in England as well. Even that can transform his cricket. I am extremely delighted for Prithvi Shaw," Ashwin said.
