Chris Gayle reveals he batted with an injury to score record 215

Canberra, Feb 25: West Indies' opener Chris Gayle has revealed that he batted with an injury while scoring the World Cup record 215 against Zimbabwe at Manuka Oval yesterday (February 24).

Gayle destroyed Zimbabwean bowling attack with 215, the first ever double century in 40 years of World Cup history and 5th overall in One Day Internationals. West Indies won the match by 73 runs via the Duckworth/Lewis method. (Indian help for Gayle's record)

The 35-year-old, speaking to the media after the record-setting knock, said he was carrying an injury since last January and continued to play on.

"It's the same back injury. I've had it since last January. It can't seem to be solved, to be honest with you. It's a bit of a mind thing. I try and do a lot of massage. I'm a person that likes to go to the gym, and I've been restricted from that for a couple of months, as well.

"But eventually I went to the gym yesterday and did some work because I needed some. Eventually it worked out for me in the end. Listen, I'm in a comfortable situation to be honest with you. Like I said, just mentally I'm going too strong, so that's actually keeping it going to be honest with you," Gayle told reporters when asked about him playing with an injury and the difficulties involved in preparing for matches.

Gayle hit 16 sixes during his epic knock. This is the joint record (with Rohit Sharma and AB de Villiers) for most hits over the boundary in a ODI innings.

The bat used by Gayle for this innings was made in India - Jalandhar. The left-handed Gayle uses Spartan Sports willow.
