Could Sanju Samson Snub Shreyas Iyer and Replace Suryakumar Yadav as India’s Next T20I Captain?

A few months ago, the conversation around India's future T20I captaincy seemed relatively straightforward.

Suryakumar Yadav had led India to a T20 World Cup title. Shreyas Iyer was rebuilding his white-ball reputation through the IPL. And Sanju Samson, despite finally establishing himself internationally, still felt like an outsider in leadership discussions.

Sanju Samson

That equation may no longer exist. According to multiple reports, Samson has now emerged as one of the strongest contenders to become India's next T20I captain - and perhaps even the frontrunner ahead of Shreyas Iyer if selectors decide to move on from Suryakumar.

The shift says a lot about how dramatically Samson's reputation has changed over the last year.

Why Suryakumar's position suddenly looks vulnerable

Technically, Suryakumar remains India's T20I captain. But the timing of these reports is impossible to ignore.

The Indian skipper has struggled badly through IPL 2026, managing just 195 runs in 10 matches while looking unusually inconsistent in a format he once dominated effortlessly.

His T20 World Cup campaign also raised questions despite India lifting the trophy. Outside one standout innings against the USA, Suryakumar never fully controlled the tournament with the bat.

That has reportedly forced the selection committee, led by Ajit Agarkar, to at least begin exploring long-term alternatives.

And suddenly, Samson's name has surged into serious contention.

Sanju Samson timing could not be better

Everything about Samson's last 12 months feels carefully aligned with this moment.

For years, he was viewed as immensely talented but unreliable - the player who always threatened greatness without fully claiming it internationally.

That narrative has now flipped.

The turning point came during India's victorious T20 World Cup campaign earlier this year.

Initially left out of the XI, Samson eventually forced his way back into the side and delivered in the biggest moments:

  • an unbeaten 97 against the West Indies,
  • 89 against England in the semi-final,
  • and another crucial innings against New Zealand in the final.

He finished the tournament as Player of the Tournament.

That changed perceptions. Now IPL 2026 has only strengthened his case further.

Representing Chennai Super Kings, Samson has already crossed 400 runs this season with multiple centuries while also emerging as one of the calmest finishers in the league.

Reports suggest selectors have been particularly impressed with one specific quality: composure under pressure.

The biggest reason Samson may be ahead of Shreyas

Interestingly, the biggest obstacle for Iyer has nothing to do with form.

It is simply absence. While Shreyas has been excellent in IPL 2026 and continues to grow as a leader with Punjab Kings, he has not played a T20I for India since December 2023.

That matters heavily in selection discussions.

According to reports, the selectors believe giving Iyer the captaincy immediately after a long absence from the T20I setup would be too drastic a leap - even for someone with strong leadership credentials.

Samson, meanwhile, has remained consistently involved with India's T20 side since the 2024 World Cup cycle. That continuity now appears crucial.

Leadership experience no longer separates them

One reason Iyer initially felt like the natural successor was leadership pedigree.

He has:

  • led multiple IPL franchises,
  • taken teams to IPL finals,
  • and already handled high-pressure captaincy environments.

But Samson quietly built a similar résumé over time.

His stint with Rajasthan Royals changed how many inside Indian cricket viewed him as a leader. He guided RR to an IPL final in 2022 and earned a reputation for calm tactical management rather than emotional captaincy.

That same calmness is now reportedly becoming one of the selectors' biggest attractions.

What happens next?

The upcoming white-ball tours of Ireland and England could now become decisive.

Reports suggest the BCCI may still persist with Suryakumar for those series, but another prolonged dip in form could accelerate the transition conversation quickly.

If that happens, Samson appears increasingly well-positioned.

Not just because of form.

But because he now ticks almost every box:

  • international continuity,
  • leadership experience,
  • dressing-room reputation,
  • clutch performances,
  • and long-awaited consistency.

For years, Sanju Samson was viewed as Indian cricket's eternal "what if." Now, he may be one strong series away from becoming India's next T20I captain.
