CPL 2024: Play halted in Guyana due to floodlight failure, Nicholas Pooran left stranded on 91

By MyKhel Staff

CPL 2024: In an unprecedented turn of events, the Caribbean Premier League match between Trinibago Knight Riders and Barbados Royals was halted with five balls to spare in the first innings due to floodlight failure at the Providence Stadium.

One of the four floodlights at the stadium stopped working after Trinibago Knight Riders batter Andre Russell smashed a six on the first ball of the 20th over from Barbados Royals pacer Obed McCoy. Nicholas Pooran was batting on 91 off 60 on the other end.

Despite three of the other light towers working, the playing area looked dark as the players left the field. Before the concerned floodlight could be repaired, another one went off leading to further delay.

The staff at ground toiled hard to fix the flood light, but a considerable amount of time was lost in the process. In fact, another few minutes of delay could have forced the match to be abandoned, and Knight Riders qualify for the qualifiers ahead of Royals.

The officials reduced the match to a five-over per-side contest as Barbados Royals were given a 60-run target to chase in five overs.

Royals gunned down the target in just 4.2 overs on the back of an unbeaten 50 off 17 as four-time champions Trinibago Knight Riders crashed out. Barbados will now face the loser of Qualifier 1 between Guyana Amazon Warriors and Saint Lucia Kings.

Earlier, Trinibago Knight Riders elected to bat first after winning the toss. Sunil Narine was dismissed for two, while his opening partner Jason Roy scored 25 off 17.

TKR captain Kieron Pollard scored 17 off 19, but a whirlwind innings from Pooran kept the scoreboard ticking for the side. Knight Riders were 168/3 in 19.1 overs when the play halted due to the floodlight failure.
