Edgbaston, June 9: England created history here in Birmingham on Tuesday when they thrashed World Cup finalists New Zealand by 210 runs to take 1-0 lead in a five-match series.

Powered by brisk tons by Joe Root and Jos Buttler, the hosts posted 408 for 9 in 50 wickets, their highest in 50-overs version and then bowled out New Zealand for 198 in 31.1 overs.

Earlier, Kiwi skipper Brendon McCullum won the toss and asked the hosts to bat. Root hit 104 off 78 balls while Butler slammed 129 off 77 balls and a perfect finishing touch was given to the innings by Adil Rashid's 50-ball 69.

English captain Eoin Morgan scored 50 off 46 balls.

For New Zealand, their hero in the World Cup Trent Boult was the peak of the bowlers with 4 wickets for 55 runs.

England's 408-9 surpassed Bangladesh's 391-4 registered in 2005.

New Zealand's chase received a jolt as both their hard-hitting openers McCullum and Martin Guptill were back into the hut with the scorecard reading 52. Ross Taylor (57 off 54 balls) was the highest scorer for the visitors.

Steven Finn (4 for 35) and Rashid (4 for 55) were the most successful bowlers for England.

It was England's first match after their disastrous World Cup campaign in Australia and New Zealand earlier this year where they failed to cross the preliminary stage.
