Cricket Australia faces fresh crisis as 5 Australia Players reject Central Contract amid BBL Row

Cricket Australia is facing a fresh crisis after its ambitious plan to privatise the Big Bash League hit a major roadblock, with three state associations rejecting the proposal.

Compounding the issue, five senior Australian players have refused to sign the central contracts offered to them, raising concerns over player retention and the future of the domestic T20 competition.

According to a report in Code Sports, the five unhappy stars are dissatisfied with the contract terms presented by Cricket Australia. Many Big Bash League players are now reportedly considering lucrative overseas opportunities, especially as local Australian players continue to earn AUD 100,000 to 200,000 less than overseas imports in the same league.

The privatisation push, valued between $600 million and $800 million, failed to get the required support. New South Wales, Queensland, and South Australia were among the three state bodies that rejected the current model. Cricket Australia CEO Todd Greenberg admitted the setback and the need for a rethink.

"There may be a world where some want to do this, and some don't, or some want to do it now, and some want to do it in another time frame. Option A for us has always been that we do it at the same time to extract the maximum value in the market. But clearly we're not at that point. So we now have to reassess what comes next."

Greenberg added that any future decision must benefit the entire sport.

"We would have to get some deep analysis to understand the impacts on Australian cricket... We have to look at that lens in the decisions that we make. And we've now got some analysis to do if that's the case or not."

The developments come shortly after reports that Test and ODI captain Pat Cummins was offered a AUD 12 million, three-year central contract. Cummins is currently earning Rs 18 crore (approx. USD 2.1 million) per season as captain of Sunrisers Hyderabad in the IPL 2026.
