How Teams Qualify for Cricket at the LA28 Olympics: India, Australia Among First to Book Spots

Cricket's return to the Olympic Games has taken a major step forward after the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the International Olympic Committee (IOC) confirmed the qualification pathway for the men's and women's T20 tournaments at the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.

The sport will feature at the Olympics for the first time since 1900, with six teams competing in both the men's and women's competitions. The qualification system also introduces the inaugural ICC Olympics Qualifier, which will determine the final spot in each tournament.

India, Australia among first women's teams to qualify

The ongoing ICC Women's T20 World Cup 2026 has already confirmed four teams for the Los Angeles Olympics.

Australia, Great Britain (through England), India and South Africa have secured automatic qualification after emerging as the highest-ranked teams from Oceania, Europe, Asia and Africa, respectively.

The remaining two places will be decided through ICC T20I rankings and the newly created ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027.

## How teams will qualify for the LA28 Olympics

A total of six teams will compete in both the men's and women's T20 events.

Five qualification spots will be decided through existing ICC competitions and ICC T20I rankings, while the sixth and final berth will be awarded through the first-ever ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027.

For the men's competition, the highest-ranked eligible teams from Africa, Asia, Europe and Oceania in the ICC Men's T20I rankings on December 31, 2026, will qualify automatically, provided they are ranked inside the top 15 globally.

The United States, as hosts, can qualify automatically in both men's and women's events if they are ranked inside the top 15 in the respective ICC T20I rankings by the qualification deadline.

If the USA fail to meet that requirement, the automatic qualification place will instead go to the next highest-ranked eligible nation.

New ICC Olympics Qualifier introduced

The final qualification place in both the men's and women's tournaments will be decided through the newly introduced ICC Olympics Qualifier in 2027.

Eight teams will participate in each qualifier.

Seven teams will qualify based on the next highest ICC T20I rankings after the automatic qualifiers have been determined, with the eighth place reserved depending on qualification scenarios involving the Caribbean.

The ICC is yet to announce the host nation and dates for the tournament.

West Indies cannot compete as one Olympic nation

One of the biggest talking points in the qualification pathway concerns the West Indies.

Unlike ICC tournaments, the West Indies cannot compete as a single team at the Olympic Games because they are not recognised as an IOC National Olympic Committee.

If either the men's or women's West Indies team finishes among the eight highest-ranked teams eligible for the Olympics, the ICC will stage a dedicated Caribbean qualifying tournament.

That event will determine which Caribbean nation will represent the region at the ICC Olympics Qualifier.

Tournament format for cricket at Los Angeles 2028

Each competition will feature six teams divided into two groups of three.

Every team will play the other sides in its group once before facing two teams from the opposite group that finished in different positions.

The top two teams in the final standings will contest the gold medal match, while the third and fourth-placed teams will compete for bronze.

Each nation will be allowed to name a squad of 15 players for the Olympic tournament.

Jay Shah hails 'historic moment' for cricket

ICC Chairman Jay Shah described cricket's Olympic return as a landmark moment for the sport.

"Cricket's return to the Olympic Games is a landmark moment for our sport and a powerful opportunity to showcase the very best of cricket to the world.

"The confirmation of this qualification pathway is an important step towards Los Angeles 2028 and gives Members across the world a clear and exciting route to the Olympic stage.

"The Olympic Games represent the pinnacle of multi-event sport, and cricket's inclusion at LA28 will inspire players and fans in every region. This is an historic moment, and one of great opportunity for our Members, as we continue to grow the game and take it to new audiences around the world."

ICC Chief Executive Sanjog Gupta added that the qualification system balances competitive standards with global representation while creating another major ICC event through the Olympics Qualifier.

Cricket will make its long-awaited Olympic return at Los Angeles 2028 after an absence of 128 years, with T20 cricket set to be played at a purpose-built venue in Pomona.
