Gautam Gambhir has recalled the moment he cried the whole night after India lost their 1992 World Cup match against Australia in Brisbane by one run. It was that very moment when he decided to win the World Cup for India one day.
In the rain-marred match, India had to chase 236 runs in 47 overs. Ravi Shastri opened for India and scored 25 runs, while his opening partner Kris Srikkanth was dismissed for a 10-ball duck. Sachin Tendulkar came out to bat at four but was dismissed by Steve Waugh for 11 off 19 balls.

Captain Mohammad Azharuddin took the onus on him and scored 93 runs off 102 balls. Sanjay Manjrekar also scored 47 off 42 balls before getting run out. However, Ajay Jadeja (1) failed to deliver towards the end. Manoj Prabhakar and Venkatapathy Raju got run out on the final two deliveries of the match as India lost by one run.
"After seeing a match, I wanted to win the World Cup for India. I remember the 1992 India-Australia World Cup game in Brisbane, which India lost by one run, and I actually remember that I cried the entire night. I have never cried like that before or after that, and I don't know why," Gambhir told Sportskeeda in an interview.
"I was an 11-year-old at that time. I cried the entire night and said that I wanted to win the World Cup for India. I said that in 1992 and I was able to fulfill that dream in 2011. I would have felt unhappy before or after that match but I didn't used to cry like that. I remember Venkatapathy Raju getting run out and India lost by one run. The match used to come early in the morning, so I used to watch that game after waking up at five in the morning, but I was never as sad before or after that game," Gambhir added.
Gambhir won two World Cups with Indian in his career. He was part of the Indian team which won the 2007 T20 World Cup and World Cup 2011. He was India's top-scorer in the finals of both the World Cups.
