Chennai Super Kings (CSK), the five-time Indian Premier League (IPL) champions, have once again found themselves in the spotlight, but this time for all the wrong reasons.
The latest controversy stems from explosive allegations made by former IPL chairman Lalit Modi, who accuses CSK owner N Srinivasan of rigging the IPL auction ahead of the 2009 season. Modi claims that this manipulation was done to ensure that England all-rounder Andrew Flintoff was bought by CSK.

Lalit Modi, who has had a tumultuous history with Srinivasan, made these accusations during a recent appearance on YouTuber Raj Shamani's podcast, Figuring Out. Lalit Modi did not mince his words as he revealed the behind-the-scenes dealings of the 2009 auction.
"Auction rigging. I gave Flintoff to Srinivasan. Yes, we did. No doubts about it; every team knew about it. Srinivasan wasn't going to let the IPL happen. He was a thorn in our Board. Yes, we told everybody not to pick 'Flintoff.' Yes, that I did-because Srinivasan said I want Flintoff," Modi said candidly during the podcast.
According to Modi, the arrangement ensured that no other team would bid for Flintoff, who was eventually sold to CSK for $1.55 million. Despite the controversial circumstances surrounding his acquisition, Flintoff's stint with CSK was far from successful. The English all-rounder played just three matches, scoring 62 runs and taking two wickets. He never returned to the IPL after his disappointing debut season.
Modi also accused Srinivasan of using his influence within the BCCI to manipulate umpiring decisions in favor of CSK. The former IPL chairman claimed that Srinivasan would frequently change umpires at the last minute for CSK matches, allegedly bringing in Chennai-based umpires to officiate. Modi referred to this practice as "indirect fixing," which he said became apparent when he noticed a pattern of Chennai umpires being assigned to CSK games.
"I went up against him, and he did many things. Umpire fixing, he accused me of it, and I accused him right back. He would change the umpire. At first, I didn't think much about it. But when I realized he was putting a Chennai umpire on a Chennai game, it became an issue for me," Modi added.
These fresh allegations against Srinivasan revive the long-standing tension between the two men, dating back to their bitter fallout over the years. CSK has previously been involved in controversies, most notably the 2013 IPL spot-fixing scandal that led to the franchise's two-year suspension in 2016 and 2018.
Despite the controversies, CSK remains one of the most successful and beloved teams in IPL history. Under the leadership of MS Dhoni, the franchise has lifted five IPL titles, with their most recent triumph coming in 2023 after a thrilling final win over Gujarat Titans.
Heading into the 2025 IPL season, CSK have once again formed a strong squad after the IPL mega auction. With the experienced Ruturaj Gaikwad leading the side and MS Dhoni still serving as the team's guiding force, CSK will start as one of the favourites to claim the coveted title once more. However, the latest allegations may add to the ongoing drama surrounding the franchise as they head into the next season.
