Chennai Super Kings had a premature end to their IPL 2024 campaign as they bit the dust against Royal Challengers Bengaluru on Saturday (May 18).
The defending champion thus failed to reach the playoffs for only the 4th time in their history.

It was an eventful campaign for CSK, who saw Ruturaj Gaikwad taking over the captaincy from MS Dhoni. Along with that, the Super Kings also brought in some decent talents ahead of the season.
And in terms of performances, it was kind of a moderate one for them again. Indian players such as Shivam Dube, Tushar Deshpande were excellent, while the veterans such as Ajinkya Rahane, Shardul Thakur had an underwhelming period.
If we take a look at their foreigners, pacer duo Mustafizur Rahman and Matheesha Pathirana were excellent whereas Daryl Mitchell didn't live up to the expectation. But with the season done and dusted, planning must have already started for next season and beyond.
With the mega auction on the fray for next season, the franchise will have to pick their retentions and release the other players. Although we are far away from there, here are four players CSK must release ahead of the mega auction.
Daryl Mitchell was signed by the Chennai Super Kings after his excellent World Cup 2023. CSK paid Rs 14 crore for the New Zealand player, who hasn't lived up to the billing. We just 318 runs with a strike rate of 142, Mitchell was expected to do much better for Chennai. Although he is a decent player, CSK will be hoping to utilise that fund somewhere else.
Sameer Rizvi was supposed to be the sensation for Chennai Super Kings in the IPL 2024. They unearthed the domestic talent from Uttar Pradesh Premier League and paid 8.4 crore for his services.

But the 20-year-old scored only 51 runs this season across five innings and was largely disappointing for them. Although Rizvi is still very young and has all the possibilities of returning as a better player, CSK won't mind testing the player's value in the auction again.
Shardul Thakur has endured a horrible outing in the IPL 2024. The CSK all-rounder picked up only 5 wickets in 9 matches for them this season and was largely ineffective. CSK paid Rs 4 crore for Shardul in the auction, but won't be over the moon with the player's performance. Hence we reckon they must discard the Indian all-rounder ahead of the auction.
Deepak Chahar's humongous IPL deal is not his fault, but injury management and the serial record of getting injuries is something where he must take the share of blame. Chahar was having a moderate season till he got injured again, and CSK must be contemplating the thoughts of offloading the pacer ahead of the mega auction. With the funds which is invested in Chahar, there is no point for the franchise to continue as they haven't received any return in the last couple of seasons.
