CSK IPL Retention 2025: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) made notable moves on the deadline day of IPL Retention 2025, releasing several uncapped players to allow for a strategic refresh ahead of the upcoming mega auction.
A key aspect was CSK's decision to utilise the newly introduced rule, which allows retired Indian internationals to be considered as uncapped players. As a result, MS Dhoni occupied an uncapped slot in the squad, leaving fewer opportunities for other uncapped talents to retain their spots.

One prominent uncapped player not retained by CSK is Sameer Rizvi. The young batter, purchased for a staggering ₹8.4 crore in the 2024 auction, had a challenging debut season, managing only 51 runs in eight innings. Despite his earlier performances in the UP T20 League, where he amassed 455 runs with two centuries, Rizvi's limited impact in IPL matches led to his release. Although promising, his struggles highlighted the challenges young talents often face on the big stage.
Rajvardhan Hangargekar, a promising fast-bowling all-rounder, was also released. Initially seen as a valuable asset capable of delivering 140+ km/h bowling alongside lower-order batting support, Hangargekar had been acquired for ₹1.5 crore in 2022. However, frequent no-balls and inconsistent bowling discipline affected his chances, leading MS Dhoni to eventually lose faith in the youngster. Hangargekar's release signals CSK's preference for more consistent all-round options.
Delhi pacer Simarjeet Singh showed glimpses of his talent but ultimately fell short of cementing his place in the squad. Making his IPL debut in 2024, Simarjeet took an impressive 3/26 against Rajasthan Royals, showcasing his potential. Yet, his overall inexperience left him vulnerable in a highly competitive squad.
Another notable name, Mukesh Choudhary, made an impact in the 2022 season, claiming 16 wickets in 14 matches, including a memorable 4/46 against Sunrisers Hyderabad. Unfortunately, an injury sidelined him for the 2023 season, and he struggled to regain his former rhythm upon his return, leading to his release.
