Five-time champions Chennai Super Kings (CSK) were handed their first defeat of the Indian Premier League season 18 - IPL 2025 on Friday (March 28) by their southern rivals Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

Ruturaj Gaikwad's side had opened their campaign with an unconvincing win over fellow five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) on March 23rd at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai, where they suffered a loss five days later to another big rival.

CSK took it to the final over to chase down 156 against a MI side that was missing their premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah and skipper Hardik Pandya. If Pandya and Bumrah had played, CSK may have faced a tough chase even in their campaign opener, but to their fortune, the pair were unavailable, allowing the Chennai side to win by 4 wickets with 5 balls to spare.

Few days later, their batting was tested after RCB set a challenging target of 197 on CSK's home turf. Skipper Gaikwad, who had scored a fifty in the opener, registered a duck vs RCB, while the rest of the top five also failed to step up, resulting in a rare home loss for the Super Kings.
