Chennai Super Kings' IPL 2025 campaign is in absolute jeopardy as they suffered a monumental defeat at the hands of Sunrisers Hyderabad on Friday (April 25).
The situation has gone from dire to desperate for Chennai Super Kings. With the defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad, CSK have now slumped to seven losses in their first nine matches of IPL 2025. With only five games remaining, their playoff hopes are hanging by the thinnest of threads.

After the latest defeat, their playoff chances have taken a huge hit. CSK do have five matches remaining, and they are-
April 30: vs Punjab Kings (Home)
May 3: vs Royal Challengers Bengaluru (Away)
May 7: vs Kolkata Knight Riders (Away)
May 12: vs Rajasthan Royals (Home)
May 18: vs Gujarat Titans (Away)
This is now the only path forward. CSK must win all of their remaining five league matches to get to 14 points. But even then, their fate is not in their hands. Given their poor Net Run Rate and the high competitiveness of this season, 14 points may not be enough unless several other teams collapse in the closing stages.
Even with 14 points, CSK will be in a multi-team tie scenario. Their only chance in such a situation would be a vastly improved Net Run Rate. To stand a realistic chance, they must register big wins in their remaining matches and hope other mid-table teams finish with 12 or fewer points.
CSK would need the likes of Mumbai Indians, Lucknow Super Giants not win more than two of their remaining matches to ensure their place in the race.
Another defeat in the next five matches would put an end to CSK's playoff hopes. Although teams have qualified with 12 points before, it may not be enough this season.
CSK’s loss to SRH has effectively ended any margin for error. Even a single defeat from here would eliminate them from playoff contention. To stay alive, they must win five out of five and win big - but even then, it may not be enough.
MS Dhoni and his troops' fortunes now hang on arithmetic permuations, and the reality may still end their campaign in disappointment.
