Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opened the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 campaign with a victory over Mumbai Indians, but the five-time champions suffered five successive defeats since their season opening victory at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
CSK were reeling at the bottom of the IPL 2025 points table with 1 win in 6 games. However, the Mahendra Singh Dhoni-led side snapped their five-match losing streak on Monday (April 14) with a 5-wicket win over Lucknow Super Giants.

MS Dhoni, who took over the captaincy following Ruturaj Gaikwad's season-ending injury, played a pivotal role in the run chase of 167 against LSG with an unbeaten 26 off 11 balls at the BRSABV Ekana Stadium in Lucknow after the veteran wicketkeeper-batter dazzled the crowd with his spectuclar glove-work.
Despite the win, CSK still occupy the foot of the table. Although they are level on points with Mumbai Indians, Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad, CSK possess the worst Net Run Rate (NRR) among the teams with four points. But they can still make their way up in the standings.
The five-time champions CSK are currently in the 10th position on the IPL 2025 points table with four points and Net Run Rate of -1.276 after two wins and five defeats in 7 outings. With 7 more games left in their league campaign, it's too early to rule them out of the playoff race.
Also the victory over LSG was crucial as they stayed level with three other teams, and are just one more win away from fifth and sixth placed teams as it stands. And also two wins away from the top four, who are on eight points each.
CSK Playoff Scenario: In their remaining 7 games, if they win 6, then CSK will accumulate 16 points, which seems to be the magic number for teams to qualify for the playoffs in the past, but last season even a team on 14 points qualfied. So, even 5 wins may be enough, but that's only if other results also go their way.
If Dhoni's side win all 7 of their remaining games, then they will definitely stand the best chance of qualifying for the IPL 2025 playoffs with a top 2 finish also being a possibility. However, any chance of progress will depend on other results and most importantly the NRR if they are tied on points.
