Chennai Super Kings have signed Australian pacer Spencer Johnson as a replacement for injured Nathan Ellis ahead of IPL 2026, adding depth to their fast-bowling attack just days before the tournament begins.
According to an official IPL media advisory, Johnson has joined the franchise for INR 1.5 crore as Ellis' replacement after the latter was ruled out due to a hamstring injury.

Johnson brings international experience to the squad, having represented Australia in 13 international matches-five ODIs and eight T20Is-claiming 18 wickets across formats. The left-arm pacer is also familiar with IPL conditions, having previously played for Gujarat Titans and Kolkata Knight Riders.
Johnson's signing comes shortly after he withdrew from the Pakistan Super League (PSL) 2026 season, where he had earlier been contracted by Quetta Gladiators.
The Australian fast bowler confirmed his withdrawal on March 15, citing personal reasons for stepping away from the PSL campaign. His move to the IPL adds to a growing trend of players prioritising IPL opportunities over other T20 leagues during the same window.
Several players have switched leagues or opted out of PSL contracts in recent seasons, reflecting the IPL's continued dominance as the most lucrative franchise competition in world cricket.
Nathan Ellis was expected to play a key role in Chennai Super Kings' pace unit before his injury created a gap in the bowling lineup. Johnson's arrival is expected to provide a like-for-like replacement, particularly in death-over situations.
Known for his pace and ability to execute yorkers under pressure, Johnson also possesses the ability to swing the ball and vary his pace with slower deliveries-skills considered valuable in high-scoring T20 matches.
With IPL 2026 approaching, Johnson now has an opportunity to make an immediate impact and strengthen Chennai Super Kings' bowling attack as they aim to start the new season strongly.
