Chennai Super Kings (CSK) boosted their chances of finishing in the playoff spots following a 27-run victory over Delhi Capitals (DC) in match 55 of IPL 2023 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Wednesday (May 10).
After talismanic skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni showed his hitting prowess, hammering two big sixes to boost CSK's score to 167 for 8 in the allotted 20 overs, Deepak Chahar and Matheesha Pathirana did the job with the ball to restrict DC to 140/8.

The top three of DC fell cheaply, while Manish Pandey (27 off 29 balls) and Rilee Rossouw (35 off 37 balls) shared a run-a-ball 59-run stand for the fourth wicket before Axar Patel (21 off 12 balls) played a cameo in a losing cause for the visitors.
Chahar (2 for 28) and Pathirana (3 for 37) were the pick of the bowlers for Chennai Super Kings. Spinner Ravindra Jadeja also claimed a wicket for the hosts, who also executed two run outs during the run chase.
Earlier, put into bat, Dhoni (20, 9 balls, 1x4, 2x6) smacked Khaleel Ahmed for a couple of maximums in the penultimate over to give a push to the score on an evening when run-making wasn't very easy.
The Capitals bowlers came to the fore, keeping the Super Kings batters on the leash on a slugging pitch. None of the CSK batters could go on and get a substantial score with Shivam Dube (25) being the highest score.
There were contributions from Ruturaj Gaikwad (24), Ambati Rayudu (23) and Ajinkya Rahane (21) as well for CSK. For DC, Mitchell Marsh (3/18 ) was the best bowler, while Axar Patel (2/27), Kuldeep Yadav (1/28) and Lalit Yadav (1/34) were the other wicket-takers.
With the win, CSK remain in second position on IPL 2023 points table with 15 points after twelve matches and are very close to sealing a playoff spot, while DC remain rooted at the foot of the table and out of the playoff race with 8 points from eleven matches.

Losing captain, David Warner said: "Back to losing three wickets. We lost a wicket in the first over. Our opening combination is crucial. We lost a wicket to a run-out. We threw wickets away. Put too much on pressure on ourselves.
"Was a gettable total. To sum it up, we needed a better first six. We couldn't rotate strike. We needed to try different things but we couldn't. When you get a wide half-tracker you can't hit it to cover. We should have executed better with those wide half-trackers."
Winning captain Dhoni said: "It turned a lot in the second half. We know that our spinners use a lot more seam than some of the other bowlers. We thought it'll slow down.
"We didn't know what's a good score. That's why I wanted the bowlers to bowl their best deliveries but not look for wickets every delivery. That's when you start not bowling well. I felt 166-170 was a good score. But as a batting unit, we can do better."
On everyone getting to bat, Dhoni added: "The good thing is Moeen and Jaddu got a chance to bat. As we get closer to the last phase of the tournament, it's important that everybody has a few deliveries under their belt. We need to be happy with our batting."
On option of Mitch Santner, Dhoni said: "I would have loved Mitch (Santner), he's a bowler that has done very well on flat wickets with the new ball. He hits the seam and bowls at a good pace."
On Gaikwad, Dhoni said: "He is batting really well, he's somebody once he starts scoring, he's very effortless. He's somebody who's happy to rotate. He has the game awareness. He is ready to adapt. You rarely get people like that. People who read the game, those are the kind of players you need in your team."
On his own cameo, Dhoni added: "This is what my job is, I have told them this is what I am supposed to do, don't make me run a lot and it has been working. This is what I need to do, happy to contribute."
Player of the match, Jadeja said: "As a spinner, feels good when the ball is turning and holding. We practise here, we know what's the ideal length and pace. The visiting team needs time to adapt.
"We are taking advantage of the home conditions. Everyone's doing their job. We are doing a good job collectively. I keep hearing Mahi bhai's chants. If I bat higher, then the crowd will wait for me to get out. As long as the team wins, I am happy."
