CSK vs KKR: Why are KKR Players wearing Black Armbands Today?
The Kolkata Knight Riders are playing Black Armbands as a tribute to CD Gopinath, a former India cricketer who passed away recently.
Who was CD Gopinath?
C.D. Gopinath was a pioneering Indian cricketer who played a key role in the country's early international successes and Madras' domestic dominance.
He represented India in eight Test matches from 1951 to 1960, debuting impressively with 50 not out and 42 against England. Gopinath was part of India's historic first Test win against England in 1952 in Madras (now Chennai), a milestone that boosted the nation's cricketing confidence.
In domestic cricket, he captained Madras, amassed 4,259 runs in 60 first-class matches, and starred in their maiden Ranji Trophy victory in 1954-55 with a century in the final. After retiring, Gopinath served as a national selector (including chairman) and managed India's 1979 tour of England, staying deeply involved in cricket for decades.
BCCI president Mithun Manhas gave his tribute to Gopinath, saying, "Mr C.D. Gopinath represented an era when Indian cricket was beginning to establish itself on the international stage. Not only did he contribute for India, but he also played a key role in Madras' early successes. His continued association with the game as chairman of the selection committee and team manager reflected his deep commitment to cricket. We mourn his passing and extend our heartfelt condolences to his family and loved ones."
