Joint record title holders Chennai Super Kings (CSK) and Mumbai Indians are set for an early El Clasico as the two five-time champions will battle in match 3 of IPL 2025 at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday (March 23).
Mahendra Singh Dhoni and Rohit Sharma captained the two sides in Indian Premier League's biggest rivalry over the years. Now, the two veterans have passed the batons to the current generation leaders.

CSK will continue to be led by Ruturaj Gaikwad, who took over the reins last season, while Suryakumar Yadav will captain MI in the absence of regular skipper Hardik Pandya, who misses the match as he serves a one-match ban for repeated slow over rate offences from IPL 2024.
Apart from the skippers and the two veterans, both the serial trophy-winning sides enter the season with some fresh faces and some familiar names like Ravichandran Ashwin for CSK, and Trent Boult for MI. Both players returned to their former franchises at the auction last year.
CSK, who also bought back England all-rounder Sam Curran during the auction, where they also successfully bid for New Zealand pair Rachin Ravindra and Devon Conway, but lost another Kiwi in Mitchell Santner to their rivals.
CSK is expected to have full squad, while MI will miss their skipper and most importantly the services of their star pacer Jasprit Bumrah, who is recovering from a back issue. The Mumbai Indians will look to end an unwanted record when they enter the Chepauk on Sunday.
The Mumbai-based, however will take confidence from their overall good record against CSK and also their positive record during their visits to the MA Chidambaram Stadium. Here is a look at the MI vs CSK head to head numbers ahead of IPL 2025 match 3:
