CSK vs MI: Mumbai Indians (MI) will be keen to snap an unwanted record of losing their first match of an Indian Premier League season when they face rivals Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in their IPL 2025 opener on Sunday (March 23) in Chennai.
MI head into the El Clasico at the MA Chidambaram Stadium on the back of a winless start to an IPL season since 2013, a year which started the curse for the five-time champions of losing all their season opening matches.

Having started the unwanted feat against Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Mumbai Indians did not see their fortunes change even last season when they lost to Gujarat Titans in Hardik Pandya's MI captaincy debut, the first match of IPL 2024.
The infamous curse of losing the campaign openers has been carried forward from Rohit Sharma's reign to start of Hardik's captaincy stint. This time, MI will hope stand-in skipper Suryakumar Yadav will bring in some luck.
This also brings us to the question as to when was the last time MI won their season opener and against who did they achieve the positive result before the curse, and the previous first match results of MI:
The Mumbai Indian last win in an IPL opening match came back in 2012 when they defeated arch-rivals Chennai Super Kings by 8 wickets under the captaincy of Harbhajan Singh at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
The curse started when Mumbai Indians lost to Royal Challengers Bengaluru in 2013 by 2 runs at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru under the captaincy of Ricky Ponting, who later stepped down from the role as MI started the era under Rohit, who in fact took the team to their first title that year.
Prior to 2013, Mumbai Indians had won four times out of five in their IPL opening matches with victories coming over Rajasthan Royals, Delhi Capitals and twice against CSK. Here is a look at MI's opening match record of every season since 2008 till date:
