Chennai Super Kings slumped to their fifth loss in 10 game in a lopsided encounter that saw knocks by in-form Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw fire Punjab Kings to a comfortable win at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.
However, it was Harpreet Brar who had the moment of the match as the Punjab Kings' left-arm spinner played a pivotal role in dismantling the Chennai Super Kings' batting lineup, particularly with his double strike in the ninth over. Brar's crucial dismissals of Ajinkya Rahane and Shivam Dube shifted the momentum in favor of PBKS, leading them to a strategic victory. The match began with CSK's captain, Ruturaj Gaikwad, crafting a cautious fifty on a challenging pitch.
Initially, CSK seemed set for a competitive total, especially after Gaikwad and Rahane's promising start, which saw them add 61 runs. However, the complexion of the game changed dramatically once Punjab introduced their spinners post the Powerplay.
Rahane was the first to fall, attempting a slog sweep only to be caught in the deep off Brar's bowling. The very next ball, Brar delivered a significant blow to CSK by dismissing Dube, a key figure in CSK's middle order and a recent addition to India's T20 World Cup squad.
Promoted to counter spin, Dube misjudged Brar's fuller delivery and was trapped LBW, departing for a golden duck despite a review. The quick succession of wickets continued as leg-spinner Rahul Chahar removed Ravindra Jadeja in the following over, leaving CSK reeling at three wickets down for minimal runs.
Brar and Chahar's combined spell in the middle overs was devastating, returning figures of 4 for 33 in their eight overs, completely stifling CSK's attempt to build a substantial innings.
Despite the turmoil, Gaikwad battled on, reaching his fifty from 44 deliveries. His efforts, along with a late flourish that saw CSK amass 60 runs in the final five overs, brought the total to 162/7. Yet, this proved insufficient against Punjab's aggressive chase.
Chasing a modest target, PBKS received an early setback but quickly recovered thanks to contributions from Jonny Bairstow and Rilee Rossouw. The duo propelled PBKS with a swift partnership, overshadowing the earlier batting woes faced by CSK. Despite some resistance from CSK's bowlers, PBKS managed the chase efficiently, sealing the win with four wickets in hand.
Brar's standout performance, marked by critical wickets and economical bowling, was undeniably the moment of the match, illustrating his impact in a crucial middle-over phase that decisively turned the game in Punjab's favour. This was also PBKS's fifth in a row against CSK.
