CSK vs PBKS: Sam Curran’s Fiery 'Call Me' Celebration - Was it an Angry Gesture to His Old Team?

CSK vs PBKS: In a contest laced with personal subplots and electric intensity, it was Sam Curran who stole the spotlight during Chennai Super Kings' high-octane clash with Punjab Kings.

Known for his boyish charm and level-headed demeanour, the English all-rounder flipped the script dramatically on Tuesday evening, delivering a knock for the ages-both with the bat and with his body language.

CSK vs PBKS Sam Curran s Fiery Call Me Celebration Was He Sending an Angry SMS to His Old Team

Promoted to bat at number three after CSK lost an early wicket, Curran walked in at 21/1 with calm eyes and a quiet determination. What followed was anything but serene. Curran, previously part of the Punjab Kings setup until IPL 2024, seemed to channel the history with his former side into every stroke.

Anchoring the innings early on, he later turned up the tempo, unleashing an innings of pure flair and calculated aggression. The pivotal moment came when he brought up his half-century. As the crowd roared, Curran turned to the dressing room and, in an uncharacteristically fierce display, threw out a 'Call Me' gesture with his hand-fingers shaped like a phone, held to the side of his head, accompanied by a defiant expression.

The celebration instantly set social media alight. While Curran didn't speak directly about it post-match, the context was telling. Released by PBKS ahead of the IPL 2025 auction, the Englishman looked like a man with a point to prove. And he did-emphatically.

Former teammates and fans were left speculating. Was it directed at the Punjab Kings' management for letting him go? Was it a cheeky shout to his critics who questioned his form earlier in the tournament? Regardless, the gesture was unmistakably personal.

Curran's bat did most of the talking. He carved his way to a blistering 88 off just 47 deliveries, peppering the boundaries with nine fours and four sixes. While CSK struggled to build partnerships around him, Curran stood tall, holding the innings together amid a flurry of wickets. From 21/1 to 190 all out in 19.2 overs, his contribution was indisputably the cornerstone of Chennai's innings.

At one point, when the experienced Ravindra Jadeja departed cheaply, it looked like CSK might falter. But Curran remained resolute, dictating the pace and lifting the Chepauk crowd with every crisp stroke. He was eventually dismissed by Marco Jansen, but by then, the job was done-and the message, perhaps, delivered.

Ayush Badoni and Shaik Rasheed offered brief cameos, but it was Curran's knock that provided CSK the thrust they desperately needed. Whether it ultimately proved enough would depend on their bowlers, but in terms of narrative and statement-making, Curran had already won the night.

Fiery on the field and expressive in celebration, Sam Curran's performance was more than just numbers. It was a declaration-a reminder of his pedigree and perhaps a phone call PBKS might now be wishing they'd answered.
