CSK vs RCB: 'Given out forcefully' - Faf du Plessis run out dismissal sparks controversy - Watch Video

CSK vs RCB: Controversy struck the Match 70 of the IPL 2024 after Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) captain was declared run out by the third umpire on the final of the 13th over against Chennai Super Kings (CSK) on Saturday, May 18.

In the high-octane virtual knockout match between the two teams, the RCB captain was batting on 54 off 38 when his unfortunate dismissal happened.

Chennai left-arm spinner Mitchell Santner bowled a delivery on the middle stump as Rajat Patidar hit it back straight as an arrow with brutal force. Santner got a fingertip to the travelling ball before it hit stumps and the bails fell off.

RCB appealed for a run out of dismissal of Faf du Plessis at the non-striker end, and the decision was straightaway sent to the third umpire. After going through multiple camera angles, third umpire Michael Gough declared du Plessis run out.

The batter shrugged his shoulders before walking back, and each of the players in RCB dressing room including Virat expressed disappointment at the third umpire decision. The replay appeared to be showing du Plessis dragging his bat well past the crease, but as per the third umpire's judgement the bat was in the air.

Earlier in the match, RCB got off to a strong start after being invited to bat by CSK. Virat Kohli (47 off 29), and du Plessis partnered for 78 runs off 58 balls. Du Plessis also partnered for 35 runs off 20 balls with Rajat Patidat before departing for 54 off 39. There was a 40-minute halt after the third over due to rain interruption.

RCB need to beat CSK by 18 runs or with 11 balls to spare to qualify for the IPL 2024 playoffs. If they fail to do so, CSK will qualify as the fourth and final team in the playoffs.
