CSK vs RCB, IPL 2025 Match 8 - RCB won by 50 Runs

RCB's innings was launched in style by the explosive Phil Salt, who hammered a blistering 32 off just 16 balls, setting the tone for the visitors. While Virat Kohli played a composed knock of 31 off 30, it was skipper Rajat Patidar who stole the show, crafting a sublime 51 off 31 deliveries to anchor the innings. The late flourish came from Tim David, whose fiery 22 off just 8 balls propelled RCB to an imposing total of 196/7 in 20 overs.

Chasing 197, CSK were rattled early by RCB's fiery pace attack. Rahul Tripathi (5) and captain Ruturaj Gaikwad (0) departed in quick succession, leaving the hosts reeling in the powerplay. Rachin Ravindra (41 off 31) showed some resistance, while Shivam Dube (19 off 15) tried to stabilize the innings. However, relentless pressure from RCB's bowling unit ensured CSK never found their rhythm.

Josh Hazlewood led the charge with a lethal spell, bagging three wickets, while Yash Dayal and Liam Livingstone chipped in with two wickets apiece. A valiant late fightback from Ravindra Jadeja and an unbeaten 30 off 16 balls from MS Dhoni only served as consolation, as CSK could muster only 146/8 in their 20 overs.

This crushing 50-run loss marked CSK's biggest home defeat in IPL history. Adding to their woes, it was also the first time since 2008 that RCB had triumphed at Chepauk. The Yellow Army was left stunned as their fortress was breached in emphatic fashion.

CSK vs RCB Captains' Comments

Rajat Patidar (RCB Captain): It was a good total on this surface. Ball was stopping a bit and it wasn't easy for batters. It's always special playing at Chepauk against Chennai because of the fans and their support as well. We were targetting around 200 because we knew it wasn't easy to chase. My goal was clear that as long as I was there I will keep trying every ball. We have not changed the batting line up it was the same from the last game. The track was pretty much helpful for spinners. We wanted to use spinners early and the way Livingstone came and bowled was outstanding. It was the game changing moment because I think we got 2-3 wickets in the powerplay.

Rajat Patidar (CSK Captain): To be honest, I still feel 170 was a par score on this wicket. It wasn't that great to bat. Bad day in the fielding cost us really badly. At the end of the day, when you are chasing 170, you bat differently. You have little bit time when you go in to bat. When you're chasing 20 runs extra on a wicket where you know it's going to be a little bit sticky and it's going to stop after the ball gets old, you have to bat slightly differently in the powerplay. It got a little bit slower and sticky. The new ball was sticking a lot until the five overs, I don't really know how it happened. Still happy that we didn't lose by a big margin and at the end it was just 50 runs. They just kept going, we dropped catches at crucial times and then there was always an extra six or extra boundary that was coming up. The momentum kept going and didn't stop till the final over. There's a long flight to Guwahati, we have to turn up mentally. The fielding has to improve a lot and we have to come back strongly.
