Chennai Super Kings were humbled in their own backyard as Royal Challengers Bengaluru registered a magnificent victory in the IPL 2025 match on Friday (March 28).
Rajat Patidar and company were at their best as they beat CSK by 50 runs and now have gone to the top of the table with two wins in their first two matches.

Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) delivered a dominant all-round performance, comprehensively outperforming Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in every aspect of the game. Their batting effort was set in motion by Phil Salt, who provided a quick start with a 16-ball 32. Virat Kohli played a more measured innings, accumulating 31 runs off 30 deliveries. However, it was captain Rajat Patidar who stood out, registering a crucial 51 off 31 balls to push RCB toward a formidable total. Tim David provided late acceleration with a rapid 22 from just 8 balls, helping RCB conclude their innings at 196 for 7 in 20 overs.
With the ball, RCB made an immediate impact, dismantling CSK's top order early in the chase. Rahul Tripathi (5) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (0) fell cheaply, leaving Chennai struggling in the powerplay. The pace trio of Josh Hazlewood, Bhuvneshwar Kumar, and Yash Dayal maintained relentless pressure, restricting runs and claiming wickets at regular intervals.
Among the top six batters, only Rachin Ravindra (41 off 31) and Shivam Dube (19 off 15) managed to reach double figures. Ravindra Jadeja provided some late fireworks, and MS Dhoni remained unbeaten with a brisk 30 off 16 balls, but CSK fell well short, finishing at 146 for 8 in their allotted 20 overs. Josh Hazlewood was the pick of the bowlers for RCB with three wickets while Yash Dayal and Liam Livingstone also managed two wickets each.
This was also CSK's biggest defeat at home against any opposition as they lost for the first time at home against RCB since 2008.
After 34 matches in the IPL, RCB have now won 12 matches. Chennai still lead by a fair margin with 21 wins, while one match ended without a result.
Although RCB have had the first round victory, the two Southern teams will collide again this season. After the first round at the Chepauk Stadium, the two teams will now play at the Chinnaswamy Stadium.
The next match between Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Chennai Super Kings will be played on May 3. It will be a night game and will be played at the Chinnaswamy Stadium, the home of the Bengaluru outfit.
