CSK vs RR, IPL 2024 Match 61: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) stayed in the playoffs contention after beating Rajasthan Royals by five wickets at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium on Sunday, May 12. This was Rajasthan Royals (RR) third consecutive defeat. CSK jumped to fourth spot after the win (14 points).
In a below-par batting display, Rajasthan Royals managed to score only 141 runs for the loss of five wickets after opting to bat first. While Yashasvi Jaiswal scored 24 off 21, his opening partner Jos Buttler scored 21 runs off 25 balls at a strike rate of 84.

CSK despite their depleted bowling unit, kept in-form Rajasthan Royals batters in check throughout the 20 overs. Even Samson could manage only 15 runs off 19 balls. It was the 40-run partnership off 29 balls between Riyan Parag (47*) and Dhruv Jurel 28) which took RR close to 150.
Simarjeet Singh picked three wickets, while Tushar Deshpande chipped in with two wickets. The likes of Ravindra Jadeja, and Maheesh Theekshana conceded only 24 runs, and 28 runs respectively.
In reply, CSK openers Rachin Ravindra (27) and Ruturaj Gaikwad (42* off 41) gave their team a good start to make the 142-run chase an easy one. After Ravichandran Ashwin dismissed Ravindra, Impact Substitute Daryl Mitchell walked in at three and scored 22 off 13. He was trapped in front of the stumps by Yuzvendra Chahal.
Moeen Ali (10) and Sivam Dube (18), the second wicket of Ashwin, departed cheaply. Drama unfurled after Ravindra Jadeja was dismissed for five runs for obstructing the field.
But captain Gaikwad stayed till the very end and ensured his team crossed the winning line without any major hiccups. Sameer Rizvi (15* off 8) finished the match with back-to-back fours in the 19th over.
Sanju Samson (RR Captain): I think after the powerplay the message was slow and two paced. Hence after the powerplay the score we were expecting was 170, we were short 20-25 runs. Simarjeet bowled really well. We are not really sure what to expect from away games. We thought batting first was the better option.
"They had a better idea of what to chase being used to playing here, we thought it would have been slower in the second innings, but the wicket was instead better. When you play at night chasing is a no brainer due to the dew.
"The pitch gets heated up during summers so I expected the wicket to slow down in the second innings. It's normal to keep on thinking about qualification, need to focus on what is under our control. I would like to tell my teammates need to focus on things that are in our hand. Need to focus on the process and hope to win the next game."
Ruturaj Gaikwad (CSK Captain): "Wonderful feeling, especially in our last home game of the league stage. Good to get a win. When we were 55-1, I felt we were cruising. One or two wickets can allow the opposition to get back.
"As a team, we have stroke-players so my job was to stay there till the end. Generally, I thought we were cruising and there was no pressure until the end. Definitely we would love to play on such wickets. It brings our spinners into play and with huge boundaries, there is an amount of risk to hit sixes.
"That is always the plan whenever you come here. Sometimes, the wicket is flatter and we go to the yorkers. When the wicket is slow and you have a bigger side, you want to take the pace off."
Simarjeet Singh (Player of the Match): "I am very thankful to the CSK management, the physio and my trainer to treat me the way they did when I was injured. It is a blessing.
"I think, after seeing the wicket, the captain decided, and we stuck to the plan. We saw how the pitch was behaving, and then I spoke to him (the captain) and decided what we wanted to do."
