CSK vs SRH, IPL 2024 Match 46: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) by 78 runs at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Sunday, April 28. This win was Chennai's first in their last three matches.

Chennai had lost their last two matches against Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) and were under pressure. They lost the wicket of Ajinkya Rahane (9) early after being asked to bat first, but 107-run stand off 64 balls between Ruturaj Gaikwad (98 off 54)) and Daryl Mitchell (52 off 32) gave a good foundation to the five-time champions.

Shivam Dube blasted unbeaten 39 runs off 20 balls, while MS Dhoni hit a first-ball boundary and remained unbeaten on five off two. SRH pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar, T Natarajan and Jaydev Unadkat picked a wicket each.

In reply, Tushar Deshpande struck thrice in the powerplay to help CSK get rid of dangerous Travis Head, Abhishek Sharma and Anmolpreet Singh. There was a 32-ball partnership off 31 balls between Aiden Markram (32 off 26) and Nitish Reddy (15 off 15) which came to an end after Ravindra Jadeja dismissed the latter. Markam was clean bowled by Matheesha Pathirana.

Pathirana also dismissed Henrich Klaasen, who scored 20 off 21. Later, Mustafizur Rahman also chipped in with two wickets to finish with figures of 2/19 in 19.5 overs. Jadeja gave away just 22 from four overs, while Impact Substitute Shardul Thakur bowled four overs for 27 runs and a wicket. SRH were bundled out for 134 in 18.5 overs.

CSK vs SRH: Who Said What?

Pat Cummins (SRH Captain): "(On would he have batted first in hindsight) Not really. We thought it was our best chance to win. They batted well to get to 210 but with thought we were in with a chance with our batting lineup, the pitch was playing well too. We’re pretty happy with how the batting lineup is going. Everyone in that lineup has performed and won us a game at some point in the tournament. It’s definitely dewy now but it was the same in the first innings as well. We’ll bounce back quickly."

Ruturaj Gaikwad (CSK Captain and Man of the Match): "Feeling pretty good. Tough to play in such wet conditions, and to be able to win by 70-odd runs is a clinical performance. Was blessing in disguise at toss. Everything is good (injury concern?). Too hot and humid conditions. Even the last game, was there batting for 20 overs and fielding for 20 overs.

"Today also almost same. Wasn't thinking about hundred. Wanted to make sure we get to 220-odd. Was disappointed that I missed 4-5 hits at the back end. During innings break I felt it could make a difference and I was upset. But thankfully it was enough. Last game we made some errors. Some loose balls here and there. Today we were outstanding in the field.

"Stuck to the plans and knew what the conditions were. With impact player rule, you always want the extra 20 runs. Never know what par score is. That was one area - not getting wickets in powerplay. That's the only way it can put opposition in back foot. He's bowling really well (Deshpande).

"His hard work is paying off. Special mention to Jaddu as well. In these wet conditions to go for 22 runs, that was the match turning spell. I'm not vocal. Can't tell seniors in the dressing room what to do. You have to take the back seat and let them do their job."

Tushar Deshpande (CSK bowler): "When we came to bowl, the only plan was to have patience against SRH who are quite aggressive in the powerplay and that paid dividends for us. Bowling that length in the powerplay is crucial, even if I get hit, I always challenge the batter to hit that length again and it worked for me today.

"The ground was soaking wet, it swung for a couple of balls and then it did not. It was a bit sticky and I thought we used the pitch well. We had a specific plan - even if they hit a good ball, we will focus on our plans and not get carried away by them."
