Mohammed Shami, one of India's most experienced fast bowlers, faced a challenging season in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025. Representing Sunrisers Hyderabad, the right-arm pacer could manage only six wickets across nine matches, a stark contrast to the impact he made in previous editions of the tournament.
His dip in form came as a surprise to many, especially considering his Purple Cap-winning performance just a few seasons ago for Gujarat Titans.

With Shami struggling to find his rhythm and consistency, the selectors also decided to omit him from India's squad for the upcoming five-Test series against England. This move further fuelled discussions around the veteran's future in international cricket, particularly in the shortest format.
However, Sunrisers Hyderabad's head coach Daniel Vettori came out in strong support of Shami following their thumping 110-run win over Kolkata Knight Riders in the final league match of the season. Speaking to the media, Vettori addressed Shami's recent struggles and provided a perspective that echoed patience and trust.
"Shami hadn't played a lot of T20 cricket leading into this season, and getting back into the groove does take time," Vettori stated. "The T20 game has evolved significantly over the last 18 months. When he last played in the IPL, he was exceptional and ended as the Purple Cap winner. This year, unfortunately, he just wasn't able to reach that same level."
Despite the underwhelming stats, Vettori acknowledged Shami's effort and commitment behind the scenes. "I know he trained incredibly hard and was eager to contribute to the team's success. Sometimes, it just doesn't come together. But knowing the kind of bowler he is, I have no doubt he'll bounce back."
While questions loom over Shami's place in India's T20 plans, the support from respected figures like Vettori may offer the veteran pacer the motivation he needs. With his experience and proven pedigree, a strong comeback could still be on the cards for one of India's finest seamers.
