David Miller dismisses T20I retirement reports, South Africa veteran says 'best is yet to come'

David Miller has dismissed reports which claimed that he has retired from T20I cricket, saying that he would continue playing for South Africa in the format. The rumours of his retirement came after he failed to take South Africa over the line in the T20 World Cup 2024 final against India.

16 runs were needed off the last six balls when the southpaw blasted the first ball from Hardik Pandya towards long off. The ball had almost sailed over the boundary ropes before Suryakumar Yadav came in the picture and took a juggling catch for ages.

Once David Miller departed India were assured of ending their 13-year-long wait for an ICC World Cup title. Hardik later also picked the wicket of Kagiso Rabada as India won the final by seven runs. A gutted David Miller was seen in tears post South Africa's heartbreak defeat. The Proteas had qualified for their maiden World Cup final.

But the 35-year-old has quashed all the retirement reports with an Instagram Story on Tuesday. "Contrary to reports, I have not retired from T20 international cricket. I will continue to be available for the Proteas. The best is yet to come," Miller wrote.

In his previous story, Miller has called South Africa's defeat in the T20 World Cup 2024 a tough pill to swallow. He promised that South Africa would keep raising the bar in future ICC events.

“I am gutted!! Really tough pill to swallow after what transpired 2 days ago. Words don't explain how I am feeling. One thing I do know is how proud I am of this unit. This journey was an incredible one, with highs and lows throughout the entire month. We have endured pain, but I know this team has the resilience and will keep raising the bar," Miller had written.

David Miller has played a total of 125 T20I matches for South Africa and scored 2437 runs at an average of 33.38 and a strike rate of 140.54. He has two hundreds and seven fifties to his name in the format. The next T20 World Cup is scheduled to be held in India and Sri Lanka in 2026.
