David Warner Appointed Sydney Thunder Captain Right After Leadership Ban Lifted, Ready for BBL 2024-25

By MyKhel Staff

Former Australian cricket star David Warner has been named the captain of Sydney Thunder for the 2024-25 Big Bash League (BBL) season. This announcement follows Cricket Australia's recent decision to lift Warner's lifetime leadership ban.

The ban was imposed in 2018 after his involvement in the infamous ball-tampering scandal during a South Africa tour. The decision by Cricket Australia's Code of Conduct Commission allows Warner to re-enter a leadership role, a move warmly received by Thunder fans and cricket enthusiasts.

Expressing his excitement, Warner said, "Captaining the Thunder again this season means a lot to me. I was part of the team from the start, and now to be back with that 'C' next to my name feels fantastic. I'm looking forward to leading from the front and sharing my experience with the young talent coming through."

His words reflect both pride and responsibility, as he takes over from Chris Green, who led the team last season. Warner, who last led an Australian team in 2018, is set to guide a squad featuring both rising and established talents. "One of the most exciting parts of this role is the chance to give back to the younger players, to pass on some of the knowledge I've gathered over the years," Warner said.

He acknowledged promising players like Ollie Davies, Jason Sangha, and Sam Konstas. "I want to help them grow so that one day, one of these young guns can step up and lead the team when I'm done." Sydney Thunder's general manager, Trent Copeland, praised Warner's return, calling it "a huge moment" for the club.

"For the fans in Western Sydney who've long recognised David as a Thunder legend, it's a special moment to now see him as their captain," Copeland shared, highlighting the legacy Warner is building within the community. Sydney Thunder will kick off their season on December 17 against the Adelaide Strikers in Canberra.

Fans are especially looking forward to the first Sydney derby on December 21, where Thunder will face the Sydney Sixers at Showground Stadium. Warner's captaincy marks a pivotal moment for Sydney Thunder, aiming to bounce back from last season's last-place finish.
