David Warner Open to Come Out of International Retirement if Selected For Champions Trophy 2025

By MyKhel Staff

David Warner on Monday (July 8) confirmed his international retirement, but the swashbuckling opener has left the door open on returning for Australia in next year's ICC Champions Trophy.

Warner announced his international retirement in parts over the last year, starting with Test format in December 2023 after Australia's three-match red-ball series against Pakistan concluded. He also announced his retirement from ODIs a few days later.

The 37-year-old's international career ended after Australia crashed out of the T20 World Cup in the Super 8 stage last month. However, Warner, who will continue playing franchise cricket, made himself available for the Champions Trophy 2025.

"I will continue to play franchise cricket for a while, and I am also open to playing for [Australia] in the Champions Trophy if selected," Warner posted on Instagram.

Even though Warner has hinted at a possible return to international cricket if selected by Australia for next year's ICC Champions Trophy in Pakistan, the left-handed opener officially confirmed his international retirement via social media.

"Chapter closed!! It's been an unbelievable experience to play at the highest level for such a long period. Australia was my team. The majority of my career was at the international level. It's been an honour to be able to do this," Warner wrote in his Instagram post.

"100+ games in all formats is my highlight. I want to say thanks to everyone out there who has made this possible. My wife and my girls, who sacrificed so much, thank you for all your support.

"No person will ever know what we've been through. For all the cricket fans out there, I truly hope I have entertained you and changed cricket, especially tests, in a way where we scored a bit faster than others. We cannot do what we love without the fans, so thanks," Warner added.

In his international career, Warner made 112 appearances in Tests, scoring 8786 runs at an average of 44.6. He also scored 26 hundreds and 37 fifties in the longest format.

In T20Is, Warner scored 3277 runns in 110 matches at an average of 33.4 and a strike rate of 142.5 with an hundred and 28 half-centuries to his name in the shortest format.

In ODIs, Warner has amassed 6932 runs in 161 matches at an average of 45.3. In the 50-over format, he has smashed 22 hundred and 33 fifties. He has also won two ODI World Cups, one T20 World Cup and one World Test Championship in his career.
