David Warner is all set to lead Delhi Capitals at the upcoming IPL 2023, starting March 31, say reports. The report further read that the franchise's head coach Ricky Ponting felt his compatriot is the ideal man to be the interim captain of the team as Rishabh Pant is unavailable for the tournament following a car accident late last year.
David Warner was considered over Axar Patel, who was vice-captain last season, as the captain because of his track record of leading IPL teams in the past.
Warner led his old franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad to the IPL title in 2016. During his stint as their captain, Warner won 35 out of 69 games, making him the joint-fifth most successful captain in terms of matches won.
Warner was also stand-in captain of Delhi's old franchise and now-defunct Delhi Daredevils back in 2013.
Warner was Delhi Capitals' most successful batter last IPL with 432 runs while hitting five half-centuries. Warner, however, had a not-so-impressive outing at the recently-concluded Border Gavaskar Trophy as he was ruled out after getting injured during the second Test and couldn't make an impact during the first Test, which Australia lost in three days.
