David Warner Willing to Come Out of Retirement for Border-Gavaskar Trophy Against India

David Warner, a former Australian opener, has expressed his willingness to come out of retirement to play against India in the Border-Gavaskar Trophy.

The 37-year-old retired earlier this year after a home Test against Pakistan. Despite his retirement, Warner remains open to returning if Australia needs him in the opening slot.

David Warner Open to Returning for India Series in Border-Gavaskar Trophy

Warner's decision comes as Australia faces an opening dilemma. Cameron Green is unavailable due to upcoming lower spine surgery, sidelining him for at least six months. Steven Smith, who has tried opening, has struggled against the West Indies and New Zealand.

Australia's Opening Challenges

Since Warner's retirement, Smith and Usman Khawaja have taken on opening duties in four Tests. Khawaja has been more successful, scoring 227 runs compared to Smith's 171. Both have managed a fifty each but no centuries, with their top scores being 75 and an unbeaten 91 against the Windies.

The upcoming series against India is crucial for Australia's World Test Championship aspirations. The five-Test series begins in Perth on November 22. Warner noted that Australian players are preparing through the Sheffield Shield, and he might join them to regain fitness and form.

Warner's Readiness

"Honestly, if they really needed me for this series, I’m more than happy to play the next Shield game and go out there and play," Warner stated. He added that although he retired for personal reasons, he is ready to step up if required.

Warner emphasised his availability by saying, "I'm always available, just got to pick up the phone. I’m always dead serious." He highlighted that his preparation has been similar to other players who have played only one red-ball game since February.

India Series Significance

Australia aims to reclaim the Border-Gavaskar Trophy from India, having lost it in the last four encounters. The series holds significant importance as it impacts their qualification for the World Test Championship final.

The Australian team is keen on regaining the trophy from Rohit Sharma's side. With Warner potentially returning, they hope to strengthen their squad and improve their chances in this pivotal series.
