'Day-night Test in Adelaide was a huge success'

Adelaide, Nov 30: The International Cricket Council (ICC) today hailed the first-ever day-night Test as a "huge success", which was "enjoyed by cricket followers across the world".

The maiden day-night Test was played between Australia and New Zealand at the Adelaide Oval from Friday (November 27). Though it did not last the full 5 days, the experiment was enjoyed by 123,736 spectators (including all 3 days) at the ground.

The match ended on the 3rd day yesterday (November 29) with the home team winning a tense contest by 3 wickets. It was a low-scoring match with Australia successfully chasing a target of 187 in the 4th innings under lights against the pink ball.

ICC Chief Executive David Richardson today declared that the game was "exciting" and played in "exemplary spirit".

"The inaugural day/night Test in Adelaide was a huge success, enjoyed by cricket followers across the world. I would like to congratulate both the Australia and New Zealand teams on a thrilling game of cricket," Richardson said in a media release on Monday (November 30).

"It was an exciting game, played in exemplary spirit, and in front of record crowds - a great advert for Test cricket," he added.

Richardson said day-night Tests were not feasible at all venues. "Although day/night Tests will not be feasible at every venue, it certainly provides a new dimension for players, spectators, broadcasters and fans alike and it is here to stay.

"We need to make sure we take all the learnings we can from this first match, identify what has worked well and what needs improving, and make sure that future day/night Tests are as good, if not better.

"I have every confidence that day/night Tests will continue to be embraced by more Boards in the near future to, in time, become a regular feature of Test match scheduling," the former South African player said.
