Day-night Test is a 'big step', hope it works: Virat Kohli

Nagpur, Nov 24: Calling it a "big step" towards changing Test cricket, India captain Virat Kohli today hoped the idea of day-night five-day games works out.

Australia and New Zealand are set to play the first-ever day-night Test in Adelaide from Friday (November 27).

Kohli has supported day-night Tests

With dwindling crowds for Test matches, many feel day-night games are the best way to bring fans back to stadiums.

Ahead of India-South Africa 3rd Test in Nagpur, Kohli gave his backing to the new concept and called upon other teams also to play if it works.

"I have heard a few of the players giving feedback on playing with the pink ball. The only thing that they were concerned about was during twilight it is very hard to pick up the ball. During the day it was still fine. At night it was okay as well. But when the floodlights are not on and when sun was going down they found it difficult," Kohli said on Tuesday (November 24) when he was asked about day-night Tests.

He continued, "It is a landmark Test. It is a big experiment. It is a big step towards changing something in Test cricket. I hope it works. I hope it can be another option as well.

"I am glad that two teams (Australia and New Zealand) have agreed to play an official Test like that as an experiment. I give credit to Australia and New Zealand that both they have decided to do this. Hopefully it will be better for the game. It will be a step which we all might remember few years down the lane. Let us hope so."

The right-handed batsman called day-night Test as "exciting" and if successful would turn out to be a landmark one.

"It will be something different. It will be something exciting. As cricketers I think we all should be willing and accepting of the fact that we need to step forward and contribute to the game however possible. So if this is a step towards improving the excitement and the popularity of Test cricket then every team should be in for it. Once the experiment works it might just be a landmark in itself," Kohli said.
