DC vs RR: In a curious moment during Match 32 of IPL 2025 between Delhi Capitals and Rajasthan Royals at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, Riyan Parag became the latest player to fall afoul of the BCCI's new bat verification procedure, popularly being referred to as the "gauge test."
The incident unfolded during Rajasthan's chase of 189 when Parag walked in to replace an injured Sanju Samson. The Royals skipper had retired hurt after attempting a wild swing against Delhi pacer Mohit Sharma. Although Samson initially tried to play through the pain, a brief stoppage for medical attention eventually led to his exit, allowing Parag to enter the crease.

However, before Parag could face his first delivery, the on-field umpire stopped him and subjected his bat to the new BCCI gauge test - a rule recently implemented to ensure standardization in bat sizes. Much to Parag's dismay, his bat didn't pass the gauge, leading to an animated exchange with the umpire before he was asked to swap it for another.
Parag is now the latest player in the 2025 season to face this issue, after Sunil Narine was previously asked to switch bats for similar reasons.
In a bid to strike a better balance between bat and ball in the high-scoring T20 format, the BCCI has introduced a mandatory bat size check for every batter. According to the new regulation, openers will have their bats assessed by the fourth umpire before heading out to bat, while all subsequent batters will have their bats checked by the on-field umpires before they take guard.
IPL Chairman Arun Dhumal shed light on the rationale behind the move: "The idea is to ensure that no player gets an undue advantage. We want to maintain a level playing field and preserve the spirit of the game. Technology and fairness are at the heart of this initiative."
This regulation, while unusual in its on-field execution, reinforces the league's commitment to competitive integrity and could well become a standard across T20 leagues worldwide in the near future.
