Deepak Chahar gives cracking reply to Greg Chappell's comment on his height: 'Many have spoken like that'

Deepak Chahar, who was recalled in the Indian team for the last two T20Is against Australia, had reacted to an old comment from Greg Chappell in which he had suggested the pacer choose alternate career by pointing at his height.

The 31-year-old said people have doubted his abilities in the last couple of years as well. Notably, Deepak Chahar has suffered injury setbacks over the last few years. He last represented India in an ODI match in December 2022.

The Chennai Super Kings (CSK) pacer said that even his close friends did not back him for playing for India, however, he had the belief in him even when he was not finding a place in Ranji Trophy squad.

"That’s an old tale. Many people have spoken on those lines even in the last few years. Not everyone trusts you," Deepak Chahar told Akash Chopra when asked about Greg Chappell’s suggestion that he rather look for an alternate career since he didn’t have the height of a pace bowler.

"When I began playing Ranji Trophy (2010) and till the time I played for India in 2018, I would tell everyone that one day I would play for India. Nobody would trust me. There was a time that I was finding it difficult to secure a place in the Ranji Trophy team. It was not an issue with performance, it only concerned some politics and injuries,"

"My friends would doubt me, saying how will you play for India when you are not getting a place in the Ranji team. But then I played for India. I worked hard. People will keep saying things they want. They don’t know what you do. Only those supporting you know how hard you’ve worked," Deepak Chahar told In an episode of JioCinema’s daily sports show '#AAKASHVANI.

Deepak Chahar recently featured in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2023 where he picked ten wickets in five games at an economy of 7.38. He also scored 67 runs off 39 balls at a strike rate of 171.79. In the Vijay Hazare Trophy 2023, Chahar scored unbeaten 66 off 56 balls against Arunachal Pradesh, and also grabbed 6 for 41 against Gujarat.
